I don't often recommend movies for people to watch, because in all honesty I haven't had the time to sit down and watch a movie in it's entirety in forever. Though, when I do find the time, I rarely see any that are noteworthy. Besides, my roommates have the televison on lock and everything I watch is under complete scrutiny. Therefore, I am lucky if I'm able to even sneak in a few episodes of No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain or Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. As for Gossip Girl? I usually get told to go to my room with that nonsense. Though, once I caught the trailer for this film, I was seriously in a craze trying to track down a copy of it somewhere. To my luck, I found out I could watch it via IFC On Demand. I told my roommates that I reserved a spot on the couch and complete control of the television the following day after class or else I'd be forced to fight them.. The movie deals with two main topics (Gentrification & Alternative Blacks) and gently weaves the two together by making it a story about a boy meeting a girl after a drunken one-night stand in San Francisco, and the relationship the transpires that same day. Is it no surprise that a movie about hipster blacks, bicycles, and one night stands has me so intrigued? And how lame do I sound right now? Just watch the trailer, and tell me that this doesn't also throw you into a frenzy to watch it?
In my opinion, the movie was really great. I kind of saw myself in the character Mikah, and the girl in the film looked and kinda acted like my ex-girlfriend. So needless to say, watching the film almost felt kind of sentimental. To the movie's success, it didn't try to do too much with the limited amount of time that came with it, but still nailed a lot of topics that I've always asked myself and have barely ever gotten a chance to speak about with my friends. For the majority of the black friends I have, none of them are all that alternative.. Also, makes me really anxious to get back on my bike :) Check this extra clip with the director and writer Barry Jenkins that sets the premise of the film, and then definitely go out and try to watch it!
